Stand your dog square. Find the widest part of the ribcage, just behind the front legs.

Loop the tape around that point, flat against the coat without squashing it. Read the number where the tape meets.

The 2-finger fit test
With the vest on and the strap closed, two fingers should slide flat under the strap. Room for three? Tighten it. Can't get two under? Loosen it. It's the same rule of thumb groomers and trainers use for collars and harnesses.

That's not your dog. That's the chart.
Weight charts assume every 40 lb dog is shaped the same. A 40 lb bulldog and a 40 lb greyhound don't share a single measurement that matters to a wrap. So the vest arrives loose where it should hold, or tight where it shouldn't.

Don't save the vest for storm night. Introduce it on calm days so that when the forecast turns, it's already familiar, and it goes on in one quiet motion.

Short and rewarding
A few minutes wearing it, loosely set, paired with food or a favourite game. Take it off before your dog asks you to.
Day 2Set it once
Fit it and mark the strap
Do the 2-finger test, then mark where the strap closes. From now on it goes on to that mark. No adjusting in the dark.
Day 3Everyday life
Make it normal
A longer session during ordinary life: dinner, a nap on the sofa. Then keep the vest somewhere you can reach it in a hurry.
Storm night: open the strap early
Hook-and-loop is loud, and the rip can startle a sound-sensitive dog. Pull the strap open ahead of time, and put the vest on when the forecast turns, not once the panting starts.

Why chest girth instead of weight?
Because the strap wraps the chest, not the scale. Two dogs of the same weight can be several inches apart around the ribs, and that gap is the difference between a vest that holds and one that flaps.
My dog is between two sizes.

Will it work on my dog?
We won't give you a percentage. The honest picture: research on pressure wraps is limited. A 2024 systematic review found only four published studies, and it describes the evidence of benefit as limited, with no adverse side effects reported.
What we can control is what most vests get wrong: the fit, and how the vest is introduced. Start on calm days (see the first 72 hours) and put it on before your dog escalates.
Will it make my dog too hot?
The fabric is a breathable mesh-knit, but it's still a layer. Use it for the event and take it off afterwards. With thick-coated dogs or on warm nights, keep sessions shorter and watch for heavy panting that isn't stress.
Can my dog wear it all day?
It isn't designed to be. Put it on before the thing your dog finds hard, and take it off after.
Isn't this a job for the vet?
If your dog's fear is severe, sudden, or getting worse, talk to your vet. A vest isn't a substitute for that. It's something practical you can do tonight, alongside whatever your vet suggests.
What's the hood for?
The snood pulls up over the ears or rolls down as a collar. Some dogs like it and some don't, so introduce it the same way as the vest: short, calm, with a reward.
